Firefox has been compromised by the MS-Url mess and they had some totally self-made problems with scripting - and is used by the majority of geeks ("measured" by browser usage at different sites: computer-savy vs. normal).
As you can never be sure if the unwanted program circumvents installed detection, I use a linux based combo of virus scanners once a month: booting knoppix, downloading all new signature files and scanning all the disks.
And nobody is allowed to hook in his machine if he cannot get a clean bill from this procedure. There still are some areas unprotected, like encrypted directories, but it clears away much nonsense and also unneccessary hook-ups.
