Should have checked relief per se - it's the kind of flat sculpture such as coins or shape of the land (though you or I wouldn't know, being flatlanders :). Another meaning is the next shift (of guard or any such post), when it comes, the previous shift is relieved, i.e. the guys from this next shift are relief to them. Check "All along the watchtower" with "I can't get no relief" - not quite sure what does it mean, but it may be a guard complaining.
