Back when I lived in Jacksonville we spent several evenings out off the coast at mayport watching manta rays jump. Many were much bigger than our boat (size and weight wise). I'm not really sure why they were jumping - chasing food just under the surface or just for fun or whe but they were absolutely amazing to watch.
I'm sure the case in question was a case of somebody being in the wrong place at the wrong time and trying to occupy the same space as the ray. Kinda like taking a hike on the freeway.
