It would have been best if he could have just shrugged it off and not taken offense. I don't think that the person involved ever intends to be rude, in fact the opposite. This person goes out of the way to be polite and probably doesn't have a mean bone in their body. However, humor and gentle suggestions don't always translate well between languages.
