BTW, I have picked up the pace with the Hunter Thompson book. It's now in "the golden age of gonzo" and pretty lively, as you might imagine. Part of it was an act but part of it was that he really was a wild man. He was a catalyst for all kinds of outrageous behavior. One thing I needed to be reminded of was how funny he could be. One of his Rolling Stone colleagues -- either Jann Wenner or Tim Cahill, I think -- is quoted saying that's one thing Hunter's many imitators never quite nailed, the humor that saved his writing from being just raving.
