One of his Rolling Stone colleagues -- either Jann Wenner or Tim Cahill, I think -- is quoted saying that's one thing Hunter's many imitators never quite nailed, the humor that saved his writing from being just raving.
Absolutely. Thompson was on the thin edge of ranting and worthy commentary. I think he finally fell off the edge and that led to his suicide.
