>I'd be appalled too! Here (Canada) we get a card in the mail telling us where to go to vote - regular and advance polls. When we get to the polling place we are asked to show some form of "ID", but they'll accept a utility bill or other form of mail from any company as long as the name and address match the name/address on the card they issued to us.

We also get a voter registration card, but are not asked to show it at the polls. Bear in mind, this is CA and the rules may vary state-by-state.
