The control comes with Windows installations -- it is the Microsoft Hierarchical FlexGrid (MSHFlexGrid) control. You can have merged cells within rows but also the headings. So you can have a heading span multiple columns (this is controlled by the number of fixed rows).

You can merge column/row by cell. I have not found any limitation of using this control vs. the standard VFP grid control. However, the MSHFlexGrid control is slower to load than native VFP grid. As for info on it look in the MSDN help for the control.
