Thanks to everyone who replied! I had a 13 year old VGA cable attached to my old 17" MAG Trinitron monitor - luckily one of those with connectors at both ends, not permanently soldered into the monitor. Being that old, it was made back in the days when they actually used some copper in VGA cables. Its diameter is 50% more than the one that came with the LCD monitor, and it has chokes at each end that are twice the diameter and twice the length.

Now using that cable instead of the one that came with the monitor, all is well - not a hint of ghosting/smearing. Moral to the story - beware of cheap analog VGA cables at high resolution.
