I've seen 2 causes of this:

1. CD-writing software problem. Older versions of Roxio were pretty buggy. If you're using Roxio (or indeed, any other type of burning software) check the maker's site for point or version updates/upgrades.

I've had excellent results with Nero, if you search the threads here other people have other recommendations on software they've found to work well.

2. Failing CD drive. If the drive is suspect don't even bother trying to troubleshoot it. You can get a brand new one that burns all CD and DVD formats for about $25. If all you have now is a CD burner it's a no-brainer upgrade - DVDs have more than 6x the capacity, very useful for offsite backups etc.
