It's the same as killing an application through task manager. Suppose you had an application that you needed to kill, you launch Task Manager, and attempt to kill it. However, the application has code (say in an ON SHUTDOWN), that keeps the application running. How would you ever kill it?

1324282 I asked how VSS can be stopped in a batch file. I have now discovered Taskkill and PsKill. Taskkill is a tool in WinXP Pro and Vista. PsKill is a tool from SysInternals.
