>>The penal system is not only about retribution and rehabilitation, it is also about trying to make the next person think twice (or at least, it's supposed to be). If nobody serves their sentences, then what does it mean?

>Some argue that if crimes are committed when the person is under the influence of drugs, that should be a mitigating factor. I disagree. I read once that the highest number of repeat offenders are drug users. Unless your own life or someone else's was threatened at the time (the only mitigating circumstance that I can think of), the time still must be served.

I'm with you on that too. Crime is crime (self defense is not a crime). if one chooses to take drugs or get drunk, then I'm afraid they should have to be held responsible for 1) the decision to be intoxicated if it has negative results, and 2) the negative results of that intoxication. The only people who should be dealt with differently are those who may be mentally challenged in some way that is beyond their control (and it's provable).

>As for her, look at the viciousness of the crime if nothing else. No way should she be let out.

Amen.
