>Here is a far better obit for those who are interested. It goes into his deep seated distrust -- contempt, really -- of the establishment and hypocrisy. He had no use for the social lubricants that make everyday life a little easier and more use than was good for him for other lubricants. He became a pretty angry and apparently unhappy man in his later years, which is ironic considering how many laughs he gave others. One thing no one can say is he was untrue to himself. So long, George.

Yeah, this was lousy news to wake up to this morning. The first time I really encountered him was during college. Marshal and I went up to Penn State to visit a friend for the weekend. He had cable (first time I'd ever seen that) and some channel was running Carlin. I laughed so hard I had to leave the room because my stomach muscles hurt so much, and I didn't want to laugh any more.

Thinking about him this morning, I found it hard to believe that he was basically in the same generation as my parents. (He was 71; they're 77 and 79.) He really felt like he belonged to just the next age group up from me.
