>According to news reports here, Chicago cops generally agree the city's gun control law(s) have not kept guns out of the hands of hoodlums. Nor is there agreement that the ban has reduced gun deaths. The murder rate has gone down in recent years but there have been a number of factors at work.

>To me the only way gun control is going to work is if you enact laws that will be a real deterrent to illegal gun possession. Have a gun illegally, go to jail, for instance. Use an illegal gun, go to jail longer.

Seems to me there is nothing in conflict with the 2nd ammendment to make gun owners and users responsible for their actions. I think pro-gun folks have often been way too paranoid about registration - perhaps the new ruling by the Supremes will assuage that for all but the hardcore. I've got no problem with all kind of draconian stuff dropping on the heads of violent felons and having that doubled or trebled if they even possessed a firearm at the time they did it.

And it would also make things kind of interesting if there were a no-fault provision for any legal gun own to shoot anyone committing a crime who was armed.

>>I agree. I don't recall the handgun bans in Washington or Chicago saving common people from hoodlums with guns. If we banned all fertilizer sales only looneys would have fertilizer. So why have these bans at all that only affect law-abiding folks and have zero-impact on criminals? It's never made sense to me.

>>>>Fertilizer doesn't kill people, people with fertilizer...errr....??? ;-D

>>>I think it's people don't kill people, people who are crazy, and have ammonia nitrate and diesel fuel, and a rental truck kill lots of people!

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
