I see a terrific professor, who made his students think about multiple sides of an issue, and who taught that things aren't simple. (FWIW, one of the things I admire about him now is that he doesn't assume the electorate are idiots who have to be fed sound bites. He talks as though we have functioning brains, and can understand nuance.)
As for the faculty's complaints about lack of involvement, I've been part-time faculty at two different universities. There was never any expectation that I'd go to faculty meetings or be involved in internal politics. I got paid for teaching the courses I taught and was expected to do the teaching and hold some office hours.
