I am not adamant on the bike helmet issue, or even sure that I am right. That's seldom the case.

My own upbringing is probably a factor. My mom was overprotective to a fault, with no thought that the things she considered prudent would be considered geeky by my contemporaries. I guess that's the heart of the matter right there. Nobody wants their kids to die, duh, but we don't want them to be regarded as geeks, either.
