Still didn't work. I'm leaning strongly toward the idea that it's this particular PC itself, and that nothing will make it switch from its default.
When I spoke to tech support of the company that sold us the PCs, the tech spoke in terms of "chipset" and wondered whether or not the parallel port was "emulated", which hints that I may have a bigger (and different) problem than I first thought.
