Make sure that on both the XP and the Vista side, In the advanced tab of the controller (via device manager) the Speed and Duplex are set to 100 Mb FULL

Defaults are always AUTO, it happens that the controller sets itself in half-duplex - and that is soooo slowwwwwww - I've seen it happen
