That's what they want you to think, and why they keep their prices so high. I have added memory to three different Dell computers (2 desktop, 1 notebook) from 3rd party suppliers and have had no problems whatsoever. Other than figuring out what to do with the money I saved, anyway ;-) As John says, some of them let you enter the exact Dell model you have so you order compatible memory.
