>>>Russia stopped being a threat good 30 years ago. I don't see them being threat today unless they are seriosely provoked.

>>30 years ago = 1978. I know the strength and passion of your opinions are much greater than your actual knowledge of history, but do you know when the USSR invaded Afghanistan?
>>
>>I do agree they are not a "threat" today - just a powerful nation with great resources and some dangerous weapons which is still trying to find its place in the world and trying to work out how it will govern itself.

>>And this is very much the opinion of the US policy makers you seem to misunderstand so completely.

>From my pov, the US policy makers are spreading FUD about Russia, making more fuss than neccesary. Is russia seeking to be a world power again? Certainly yes. But looking at history, the west was more a threat to Russia than Russia to the west. And given the massive bloody wars they had to fight, there is every reason to it.

I agree completely about your assessment of Russia, just don't agree that US policy makers are spreading FUD about Russia. The Georgia thing certainly showed both Russia and the US being very careful about what they said about each other - given the history - and it seemed neither side really wants create a "cold war" where none exists. As you know, I'm sure, the whole area of Georgia/Chechnya has a very complicated history in the US/Russia relations and what is said publicly in that area means very little.

I don't see any enthusiasm here or in Russia for a return to the Cold War. Rhetoric will sometimes get a little nasty as everyone acts in what they think is their national interest, but I think both realize there are common threats to both that outweigh their differences.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
