>You might try opening the case and seeing if there is more than 1/2" of dust on the motherboard and everything else. In my experience, the ususally is caused by overheating, as in the cpu fan died, the power supply fan died, or the cpu or motherboard dies. I have seen it where there is a short between the case and the motherboard.

No, it wasn't 1/2" of dust - it was a full 1".

The day before I did an MS update, so there was a restore point that I rolled back to, and it worked.
