Title:
Random Crashes and Video Drivers
I have a VFP application (VFP 5.0a Build 415) running under NT Workstation 4.0. The client is experiencing occasional crashes where FoxPro shuts down and you get an NT error message: Exception number: c0000005 (access violation). There is no pattern to when the app crashes -- at least as far as I can tell.
I spent some time researching threads on UT regarding this problem. (Thanks everyone-- the comments were most helpful!) I was encouraged to concentrate my research in the video driver/printer driver areas. HP has suggested a couple of LaserJet drivers to try in place of the Laserjet 4si MX driver currently in place. (Though HP claims that all the NT drivers for LJ 3 and 4 series were written by MS!)
My problem is on the video driver side. The woman at Microsoft tech support suggested using the generic VGA/SVGA driver in place of the ATI 3D RAGE PRO AGP driver that came with the Dell computers on which the app runs. (I checked ATI's web site -- I have the very latest driver.) My problem is that the app has large forms with many controls -- you cannot run it properly a resolution less than 1024 x 768. This rules out testing with the generic driver which only
goes up to 800 x 600. The problem only occurs a few times a day, and the client is not willing to do testing with a different video driver if she cannot see the full forms (sounds reasonable to me).
I have sent e-mail to ATI, but they have not yet responded. Can anyone suggest any video drivers known not to tromp on VFP's memory space that would let us get 1024 x 768 resolution (color depth can be low; doesn't matter here)? Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. TIA
Steve
