I guess I'm really dense but I can not make this work. I want to pause the automation process to allow the user to edit the document, then regain control of Word so that the document can be saved (if allowed) or printed to PDF (only available under program control) or to Printer.

Then I think that what you need here is a button on your VFP form that says something like "All finished. Now do what You need to do with the document." Then VFP can make Word invisible, so what it needs to do with the automation process and then Quit Word when finished.
