Yes, I did speak to him already. But the gist of it was to say I'm not sure AA is the best way for me to get sober. Despite making what I think has been a genuine effort to be open minded, I don't think I am any more on board with the spiritual side of the program than I was the first day I walked in. I am going to think it over for a couple of days and try to decide what to do.

Please don't misunderstand that, as he did at first. He thought I plan to chuck in the towel and go back to drinking. I don't. I just don't know if this program is going to work for me. I really like the group meetings and have come to trust most of the people there. But there has been increasing pressure to embrace the whole program rather than just the parts that make sense to me. Specifically, you are supposed to surrender yourself completely to the care of God. That seems way too passive to me (especially when I don't believe in God).

Don't worry, I am not giving up.
