I'm a firm believer that free and unrestrained citizens are much better at helping people help themselves, rather than the government doing it. You'll have zero chance of convincing me otherwise. Why would I want to convince you otherwise? But the fact is that previously productive people are burdened by impossible debt or unable to feed their families because an economic bubble has burst. The sense of betrayal is profound and if these people are told "let them eat cake," you can expect unrest. IMHO.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
