Actually I have been successful in modifying the files. If I open the config.nt in notepad I can see files=200, so editing is not a problem. Doing this in the safe mode, the reboot has also been done, yet Vista, Home Premium I must add, does not respect the setting though visible in notepad.
>Another approach would be to copy the default system config.nt file and create a custom one for your application, in some other folder. IIRC with earlier versions of Windows you could, in a .PIF file, specify a CONFIG.NT file to be used when starting an application.
