stimmung from the jokes about this, but... John Wayne comes to a saloon, lays his rifle over his left elbow, slams his right fist on the bar and says "Ein Schnapps, bitte" (or in Slovenian, "prosim eno ljutico").

>>>How does he do "The HELL I will!"?
>>
>>No clue. "Bom, vraga" (I will, [the] devil) perhaps. It's a matter of legend and jokes, because even though I've spent a month in Slovenia, I wasn't watching TV, and the one movie I saw was "Back to the future" by some non-Slovenian distributor, subtitled in Serbocroatian. I saw some bits of TV here and there, saw that one Serbian series was subtitled... but that's all I know.

>>Maybe this whole thing is an overblown tale of a couple of attempts to dub? I know of a similar case, when they subtitled a Serbian film in Croatia, and a serious war drama turned into a laughingfest, because nobody paid any attention to the movie, everyone was looking into the differences between the "translation" and the original... which were tiny, few and a matter of inspiration. Everybody had great fun, and the newspaper critics had a field day. Nobody paid too much attention to the movie :).

Dragan was the same.
Did I tell you I admire nice typos? :)
> If you watch it dubbed and then watch it with subtitles the meaning in quite a few places is different (different translators?). Made me wonder what the real meaning in Chinese was!
That's a good pastime - or, alternately, catching translators in flagranti :). Specially nowadays, when many more people back home speak languages well (we all had anywhere between four and ten years of a foreign language, but most of the people would forget most of that as soon as they graduate high school). Looking at the language forum (at parapsihopatologija.com - but it's in Serbian, though we have many members from other ex-Yu countries, and we all understand each other without a hitch), the latest pearls (I've translated them back):
"Are you trying to give me heartburn?" - translated as "are you trying to burn my heart?"
"west end girls" - "the west and the girls" (probably without script, misheard)
"green freshman" - "green nerd girl"
"the Pygmy tribe" - "the tribe of Pygmalions"
"acqusition of career management skills" - French "l'acqusition de la capacité á s'orienter", back to English "capacity of finding one's way" (source: EU)
(guy pays the bartender:) "here's for the pitcher" - "here's for the thrower"
