In my experience, true. Spent a few weeks there (well, last time in 1990), and was actually happy the first week when we were close to Dutch border and could catch a couple of channels with any other language but German. The Dutch are fast readers.

The other week, in the South... well, less luck. We watched "Das Gasslicht", ganz... which wasn't so bad. But the rest that we tried to watch was just steamrolled over with the flat voices and completely out-of-context echoes. In the desert, sounds like phone booth. In the shower, sounds like phone booth. On theater stage, sounds like phone booth.
