>>British sports commentators know when to keep schtum and only comment on teh action, and the odd interesting aside. I've noticed that US commentators just never shut their yap.

>A friend of mine used to watch football (THE football, not the so-called not-quite-like-rugby thing where they use hands and butts and still call it FOOT-ball, and the ball isn't even a sphere) while listening to the commentator from the radio. The guy commenting for TV was on mute most of the time, commenting mostly on what the viewers can't see or know; the guy on the radio was spewing 200 words/minute, getting really excited every now and then, speeding up his delivery... but onscreen, there was none of that. The players would be dragging their feet, easy trot and parade, while these radio guys made it sound like the speediest action ever.

You can understand radio commentators going 90 to the dozen. But for TV, if every picture is worth a 1000 words, then a moving picture must be worth 1000 **2.
There's talk that the expression "Back to square one" refers back to the days when radio listeners followed the match with a pitch matrix to identify where the ball is now. For a kick off we went "Back to square one". I dunno.
