It just doesn't make sense to have a Web page to auto stretch based on the browser area. It worked for a while but this was really bad for reading and stuff like that. But, filling the empty area with a color will help.

Yes, I think that will help. Maybe use the same gray background as the rest of the page or something darker. The white empty area hurts my eyes and makes the rest of the page hard to read.
