What do you get when you try to connect to SQL 2008 with SSMS 2008?

I needed to have access to a SQL Server 2008 version so I installed the Developers Edition on another box in my office. I have regular access to this box for everything else over my network and both are behind my firewall but there is no windows firewall running on either of these.

I have confirmed that TCP/IP and other protocols are turned on and also the SQL Server Browser is running. In VS Server Explorer the Server shows up but under services there is only a red circle with a line through it.

I could have used a more robust version, just didn't. I also didn't want another version (instance) running on my same development box. Too much already running and dragging me down.
