There is some truth to that. But it hasn't been entirely self-inflicted. I believe Islamic fundamentalism is a sinister force that would rather destroy the world than not have its way everywhere. Some of them truly want a return to the 7th century, or to oblivion. Put together a large number of uneducated fanatics who aren't afraid to die and you've got something to worry about.
