Really, nothing is unprovoked. It all relates back to earlier events. That is exactly the reason why it is so difficult to end this.

The Palestinians (at least some groups of them) refuse to recognize Isreal and see it a occupied land. Now, don't think it goes one way. Israel has occupied Gaza and Golan. Worse, right wing colonists are building their homes on it. Now having a safety border and occupying land for that purpose is one thing, but then colonize that land is another matter (as this was not the deal in 1947).
