>Let me ask something. I know that it's not uncommon to make sure that kids catch chicken pox early, as CP (AFAIK) rarely amounts to anything more than a week of discomfort. (again, AFAIK). But the link mentioned measles - don't you think that 3 deaths per thousand cases in developed countries in otherwise healthy children seems a bit riskier?

If I were making the decision for myself, I think I'd go along with the doctor.
If you don't immunize your child, then you're counting on the people around you to immunize theirs. Immunization works because the vast majority do it, so the risk to those who can't (or don't for some reason) is greatly reduced.
My kids had the full round of immunizations (though Solomon had chicken pox long before there was a vaccine). I'd do the same if I had it to do over again.
