IS black and white. The belief that one can hold conflicting views is largely what has led to the U.S. moving slowly and slowly away from the idea of being a free or even substantially free country. On BOTH sides of the political spectrum, you have so-called leaders who pay lip-service about "the american dream" and "freedom", and yet want to qualify it with programs and institutions based solely on NEED.
I think it's fair to say that the needy are better off under charity. (Look at the donations of U.S. corporations in the early part of the 20th century, before taxation started to grow under ever-outrageous welfare programs)
