Yes, that's what gave me the idea.
As for "tailoring to the user," I agree in theory that one should be able to bring up an Options dialog that let you change as much as possible. As a matter of fact, that's the first part of an app I look at. The more options, the better. :)
But that's me, and many users either do not know such a dialog exists, or are afraid of experimenting with its options. So we can't rely on it; we do have to choose effective defaults.
