Erik,
Suddenly started to think this is not a network issue (many network problems though). Could you try that "task", on your single machine, running the app more than once and acting like a multiuser to check if it might not be a network problem. If problem occurs on single machine, then I would place "loggers" for recno(), alias() etc. (debugger sometimes mislead triggering activate-deactivate etc).
