It is pretty hard in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it it makes your life so much easier that it is definitely worth it in the end. I would add that if you are going to do a fair amount of development with VPM, you should definitely consider getting xCase and xCase2VPM, which will make data design and changes to all data-related metadata very, very fast and easy (there is a steep-ish learning curve with that tool, as well)
