>Just a point to consider: if you want to become a teacher (or a Harvard Lawyer, or a nurse, or a physician) you need to declare this intention and enter a long-term commitment to achieve a qualification. Generally this involves a period of low/non-existent earnings and debt. IOW it's a life commitment. When she talks about service and sacrifice, IMHO Michelle Obama is encouraging GenX/Y kids not to drift along with ideas of entitlement but to look for a way that they can serve society according to their own individual gifts, and to commit to that rather than hunting for easy money.

I was surprised to learn how competitive the nursing programs are. My daughter is striving to get into one. They have 560 applicants and 200 slots. The choice is based on many things but all in all, they select a certain percentage based on grade, some based on minority status, and some based on extra-curricular activity. There are some young folks who are trying for their 3rd shot into the program! I've always known that the medical programs for doctors are tough to get into (for most), but I never expected nursing to be.
