>>>The US Supreme court has already ruled that things in public are fair game. The only difference between an officer calling in a tag and checking on his PDA is volume and speed.

Also, not sure what other studies have found, but the research so far here since eye-in-the-sky ticket machines installed at many intersections have not reduced accidents at those intersections. That was the original justification. Leaves me to wonder whether the fines are just another revenue source.

The problem with static cameras is that if you are an unregistered or uninsured driver they are no problem to you. We have the same thing here with speed cameras which are usually placed to maximise revenue.

>there was a classic example of this near me. In the Uk speed cameras are supposed to be within a certain distance of accident black spots. SO there was one near me on a wide dual carriageway that had a limit of 50, the accident blackspot was on a winding single carriageway coming down a hill about a mile away.

In my local town we used to have an intersection which had traffic signals, now they have rebuilt this into a roundabout. But when the traffic light were in use, they set up a camera to frame all who drove through on a red light. What really happened was that many people was so afraid to get a ticket, that they hit the brakes as soon as the light turned to orange. So this camera which officially was there to increase the safety, instead caused a lot of serious accidents. But the stupid police chief refused to remove the camera, until the minister of justice told him to do so.

NB! We have the sequence green - orange - red - red and orange - green.
