Sometimes it pays to coordinate check-outs with others, depending on what you're both going to be doing to the same file, other times it doesn't matter. You can always lock a check-out too, so that no one else *can* mess with it at the same time.

I thought you had a point. Editing a file before checking it out is asking for trouble.
