A pretty entertaining first round. On Thursday 9 of 16 underdogs won, with Robert Morris nearly making it 10 of 16 with a colossal upset of second seeded Villanova. Yesterday favored teams righted the ship for the most part.

It's a good thing I didn't enter any pools. I would have picked several Big East teams to go far, for one thing, and they went splat on Thursday before bouncing back strongly yesterday I would have picked against the Big Ten. They won 4 of 5. My sleeper conference was the Atlantic 10. They played asleep and AFAIK were all one and done.

My upset special, Siena over Purdue, didn't happen, although they came close. Undeterred, I don't expect Purdue to go very far without Robbie Hummel.

It was a very good round for the Big 12 (oh, shut up, Kevin) and better than I expected for the ACC.

Cornell knocked off Temple, the first tournament win for an Ivy League team in 12 years. No one who looks at their roster or record should be shocked. They have a lot of seniors, which seems to help in March, and went 28-4 in the regular season. Their losses were to Penn in the Ivy League plus three quality non-conference losses: Seton Hall, Syracuse, and #1 Kansas. They lost to Kansas by 5. Next up, regrettably: Wisconsin. I would like to cheer for Cornell but will not do so against one of my alma maters. Oddly enough, both teams are sometimes called the Big Red.

Jake's Cal Golden Bears won and get Duke next. Duke, for all the dissing they and the ACC have taken this year, are playing very well and have a potential cakewalk to the final four. Tracy, cover your eyes <g>.

The game I am looking forward to most today is Kentucky vs. Wake Forest. I guess I really must like the way Kentucky plays because every opponent scares me now.

Villanova and St. Mary's tip off in 5 minutes. Enjoy!

(Apologies to our international members. I will be with you in June).
