This current interface is known as a threading engine. This is not what you have on those sites. Those sites are mainly showing the messages of the threads one after the other. It doesn't give any hierarchical representation of its structure. This is a known engine published across the Web. That was one of the reason this site was built which was to offer a threading environment which then, by the same, provides a much more rich environment. Basically, if we would change this 17-year engine to go back into a prehistoric mode like that, I think many would be ready to crucify us. :)

As for this, there is an option in the account setup which allows to receive replies by email. This is part of the subscription benefits and can be found here:

As for massive broadcast of the content, this is no longer supported since 10 years. Basically, there wasn't any much purpose in this as in order to participate one would have to use this engine.
