>"We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." -- attributed to George Orwell
This is an affully outdated phrase.
'Rough men' back in cold-war era might have been romanticised this way, but in nowdays politics thinking along this lines
represent one ignorant / brainwashed POV, which is unfortunately very common.
Things kind of 'progressed' , so 'Rough men' who supposed to be working for greater good, nowdays do whole bunch of bad things
(despicable, disguisting, criminal, murderous etc) that bare mentioning of this phrase make my stomack upset.
Depend on how broad you want to apply this romanticising; Saddam Hussein or even Osama Bin Laden were once
'Rough knights of the night', but then they switched sides {g} (what a snakes huh ?)
So how about more contemporary version of the phrase;
'We sleep well in our beds, because we have no clue (nor do we care) what they do on our behalf'
