Arial allows me to selec font style narrow or regular, both font styles are then used when printing/displaying the report.

The font and font style displayed is the same whether printing or viewing on screen. I am viewing on screen using pdf (xFrx), this third party utility I am certain is not causing the issue.

When in the Report Designer, using a textbox, I select the font, Akzidenz-Grotesk Pro (who names these fonts !), it allows the font style "light" to be selected. Save the report and then reopen the report, go to the field properties of the textbox, and select the tab "Style", the font is correctly displayed in the font textbox, click the font command button to display the Font Dialog Form, and no font is displayed (above the list) and the font style shows Regular. From this I assume the problem is with the Report Designer and not the Report Engine !
