IMO it will be remembered that way, even though it's not official. One of the most famous "no hitters" in baseball history was not in fact a no hitter. Harvey Haddix of the Pirates pitched 12 perfect innings -- yup, 36 straight outs -- before giving up a hit and losing the game in the 13th. That game is more remembered than most by-the-book no hitters.

The one saving grace of this whole unfortunate situation is that the umpire, Jim Joyce, the pitcher, Armando Galarraga, and the entire Tigers organization have reacted with such class. When Joyce saw the replay right after the game he immediately went to the Tigers' locker room, even before showering, to apologize to Galarraga in person. He obviously felt and still feels terrible about it. He's a stand up guy, too. MLB offered to let him skip the series finale in Detroit this afternoon, when he was scheduled to work behind home plate. He said no, I'll face the music. Tigers manager Jim Leyland -- who was irate on the field at the end of the game last night before coming to Joyce's defense when he admitted he blew the call -- sent Galarraga out to home plate with the lineup card at the beginning of the game. Galarraga and Joyce shook hands and patted each other on the back. I'm sure Galarraga wishes it had gone into the books the way it should have but don't worry, Armando, the game you pitched will not be forgotten. He's probably the most famous pitcher with a lifetime record of 21-18 in the history of the game. Another nice thing about baseball is fans have long memories. Haddix's game was 51 years ago last week.

Still can't believe he missed that call. He was in perfect position, right there, and it wasn't even really that close.

>I think they should give it to the guy. If it was a no-hitter that's one thing - but a perfect game? coooome ON!

>As for video replay in baseball - only problem I see with that is that baseball games are pretty long as it is - toss a dozen replays in every game and they will last till midnight every time. Perhaps each time allowed 1 or 2 request for video replay per game or something....

>>I have mixed feelings...on the one hand, the pitcher deserves a perfect game.
>>
>>On the other hand, the Phillies were screwed, and I mean SCREWED, out of a playoff win in 1977 against the Dodgers on a blown call at first base (similar situation...correct call, Phillies win). Yes, it was 33 years ago, but I still feel the anger. :)
>>
>>And I'm sure Cardinals fans in 1985 remember Game 6 of the World Series...
