TP is sort of the opposite profile of my usual rock favorites. Usually I find them early and stick with them, even into decline. I was slow on the uptake with him and gain more respect over time. He is still making great music. (A fairly recent example -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Zork5Z63jk). And he has one of the legendary sidekicks, guitarist Mike Campbell. The jangly guitar sound associated with Petty is actually Campbell.
They found a larger audience at the Super Bowl a couple of years ago. That was as good as it gets.
