My TV remains on the fritz so I didn't see it. Was pleasantly surprised by the outcome, even though England is among the teams I always cheer for. I was displeased by Mexico's first game, another team I always cheer for. A tie with South Africa? Not a good sign.

A very small sign of soccer's hold on the world's imagination, other than the U.S. anyway, was at work on Friday. Mexico played at 10 a.m. local time. One of the applications I support is used full time by the distribution department, the people who send out and receive back our main product. One of the managers asked me to come over about something and it was like a ghost town. You could have fired a cannonball through there and not touched a soul.
