I think like you said, if you move the mouse off the object just enough the mouse up is missed, and It seems like the system will think your mouse is down untill you click it again. Looks like an OS or mouse driver bug.

I'm using the MS mouse driver for the intelli point wheeled mouse (the wheel is great), you would think M$ could make a mouse driver. ;)
