I always prefered using Winsock. Although other techniques use wrappers around winsock, I still prefer the level. one. And as far as SMTP, I simply ask the client to give me the information, and I put it in a ini file, instead of digging through the registry, or where ever else Microsoft decides to put it. Now in Windows 7 it is moved away from the registry into a folder.
